Celestial Academy

Overview

Celestial Academy was a second-year university project developed by a team of seven, over approximately four to five months. It was my first experience working in a larger development team, and it gave me a valuable opportunity to collaborate with people in different roles while contributing to a shared creative vision.

The project progressed well throughout development, although we faced some challenges towards the end, particularly with the UI. This required us to adapt quickly and support areas outside of our original roles in order to complete the project. Despite these challenges, I am proud of the final game and the experience I gained from working on it.

My Role

My main roles on the project were Level Designer and Puzzle Designer, although I also contributed to game design, Blueprint implementation, and UI support.

For the level design, I worked closely with another teammate. We discussed the types of puzzles and gameplay moments we wanted each level to include, then developed rough concepts before moving into greyboxing. During this stage, I helped design and test different puzzle ideas, experiment with level layouts, and refine the structure of each area.

Once the core layout and puzzle ideas were working, I built the levels in Unreal Engine 5 and helped adjust them based on feedback and team discussion. This included improving the flow of the levels, making sure the puzzles were understandable, and ensuring the spaces worked well for the intended gameplay.

I also contributed to the overall game design by helping shape the project’s ideas and creating several Blueprints used in the game. Towards the end of development, I supported the UI implementation after our teammate in charge of UI was unable to complete everything as planned.

Overall, my main responsibility was to help take the ideas we designed as a team and implement them into the final playable project in Unreal Engine 5.

Tools I Used

UE5 - Level Design, UI Implementation, Play testing and Blueprinting.

Google Docs/Slides - To document all we have done/make regular PowerPoints that we would show to our game director to show we are on track.

Discord/Hackn Plan - To keep track of tasks, we would use Discord to communicate whilst using Hackn Plan to keep track of all the tasks we have done/needed to do.
